Sleep MedicationType of Sleep Aids

There are two type of “sleep-aids”:

  • Those that put you asleep and
  • Those that keep you asleep…

The difference is their clearance times. Ambien and some of the others sleep medications have a clearance half-life of 2 hours. They help you get asleep. To keep you asleep you need sleep medication with several hour of half life. It will carry over to the next day and also build up in your system.

If you take Ambien at bedtime and stay in bed for eight hours there is theoretically only about 6 % of the original dose still in you. Hence your digesting system should not be at risk. By far, the best sleep aid is Ativan (generic name Lorazapam).  It has about 8-hour half life, so there is some carry-over and a build up. This medicine has been around for a long time as an anti-anxiety drug.
