Antianxiety medications are used in the treatment of stress related anxiety. The best treatment of anxiety is would a combination of both psychotherapy and pharmacology .
- Antianxiety medication is administered for the relief of anxiety
- This type of medication and their action is not fully understood by medicine
- Most antianxiety medications affect the action of neurotransmitters in the brain, such as serotonin and norepinephrine
- Study suggest that antianxiety drugs work by affecting our limbic system, the part of the brain associated with emotion
- There is also a side effects when antiexiety medication is used long enough (impaired alertness, sedation, interactions with alcohol and other drugs), potential for addiction, and withdrawal symptoms. See ” Side Effects”
- For some people experiencing anxiety attacks, especially those who are stage performers or public speakers, an administration of Beta-blockers, usually prescribed for hypertension, might be a solution
- Buspirone (BuSpar) medication is preferred for following reasons:
- in cases of long-term anxiety
- fewer side effects
- less addictive potential,
- no withdrawal symptoms
- not related to benzodiazepines or beta-blockers
